The Cumberland Pencil Company is located in Keswick in the County of Cumbria.

Keswick is a pretty market town at the northern end of Derwentwater lake and is situated close to Junction 40 of the M6 just north of Lancaster and south of Carlisle. Our commitment to the environment and to the preservation of this sensitive location is underpinned by accreditation to the ISO 10041 Environmental standard.

The Cumberland Pencil Company has been making fine quality pencils in the heart of the English Lake District for over 170 years, and today remains at the forefront of pencil manufacture, with its world renowned brand of fine art pencils, Derwent. This respected history is depicted in our very successful and popular on site Museum.

Generations of craftsmen have maintained and improved upon the standards that make Derwent one of the most highly regarded brands of fine art pencils in the world. Today, this long heritage underpins modern manufacturing methods to provide enviable standards of consistency and reliability. Good enough to earn the International Standard’s quality seal ISO 9001:2000.

We have just over 70 employees on site working in production, technical, R&D, engineering, site services, marketing, accounting, IT, HR, health, safety & environment, purchasing, and production management. Our close knit workforce is well trained and employees understand their value and how they contribute to the success of the business an approach recognised by the award of the Investors in People accreditation in 1993.
