I joined The Cumberland Pencil company in 1985 as a Production Operator. In 1988 I was promoted to the position of Laboratory Assistant within the Technical Department. Following further promotions, based on training and development supported by the Company, I took up the role of Quality Systems Manager in January 2002.
With the help of the Laboratory assistants, my main role is to provide a technical service in the areas of material and process control developments, quality systems management and continuous improvement activities.
The technical systems which we develop, organise and control enable the company to conform to external legislation such as CoSHH, ISO9002:2000 Quality Management Systems and BS EN71 Toy Safety Regulations.
We give support to production departments on such areas of the business as goods inwards, process testing and inspection and give advice to production management on any technical aspects of the business. In addition, we are constantly seeking improvements in raw materials, both for cost reduction and product improvement, confirming performance by designing appropriate test regimes.
This is a role that spans across all departments and strong liaison with the R&D team is essential in my role to ensure a smooth transition of new products from R&D to production. Effective product and process improvements are an important part of the work carried out by my department utilising improvement groups and specific project teams.
Since joining the Company I have seen many changes and have been involved in many exciting challenges, which has presented me with a rewarding and challenging job which is never dull.
